Between legends and folklore

The history of Gratteri

Gratteri is a small medieval village that is the main character of a huge religious, folkloristic and cultural tradition thanks to which it is considered as one of Palermo’s most intriguing towns ever. Full of history and traditions, the town was dominated first by the Arabs and later by the Normans, who left a rich architectural and cultural legacy, such as the castle of Gratteri and the Thorns of Christ’s crown: the legend tells that during the First Crusade, the Normans Tancredi and Ruggero d’Altivilla were those who brought them here from Jerusalem. Many legends are linked to the thorns of Christ, the best known is undoubtedly that of the wind, which blew so hard to prevented their theft.
